The crowd was chanting for the kill. He couldn't see who was in the middle, but it was somebody important. It had to be somebody important because he was crying. Maybe it was the heat of the flames, but they didn't feel warm just... wrong.
He was ushered foward and found himself standing at the foot of the stone altar. A voice inside him told him not to look down, not to look away from the fire across from him. He thought it might have been a man cloaked in flaming feathers, or a bird trying to stand straight and tall. The boy on the black stone was barely conscious.
"I can't do this." He looked at the knife he hadn't noticed he'd been holding. The crowd became louder, a defeaning roar ringing in his ears. "Shut up! I can't!"
The boy on the stone... no, that wasn't right. They knew each other. They trusted each other. That boy on the stone was his friend, he was important. He could see the ropes cutting into his friend's wrists as he struggled. The crowd was impossibly loud.
He took a deep breath and slashed at the ropes. His friend jumped up, wavered and swooned. The fire wavered and then leapt foward. He blocked it and it struck him like a million tiny birds pecking at his skin. He realized that was all they were; tiny, little birds. He swatted them away until the sun rose and those that were left took flight. Those that stayed vanished in a puff of smoke.
"Toro! Toro, wake up! Come on or you'll set the whole forest on fire!" He woke with a start, looking frantically around for the birds. "Toro?"
"I... I'm okay. I just had a nightmare is all." Bucky was always comforting, whether he knew it or not. Toro was just happy to see him alive.
"Well no more nightmares if we're going to be camping in the woods." Bucky smiled. "What are you
looking at?"
"Nothing." He turned away. Bucky's wrists were still raw where the ropes had been.
Author's note: I'm using the thirteenth century description for a salamander as a small bird in flames. Also the idea that most fire elementals are dangerous.
